For the past few weeks, preteen children have learnt some of the 13 lessons program of Pilgrim’s Progress. They really enjoy following Christian on his adventurous journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City.
The lessons are designed to help children not only understand Bunyan’s allegorical tale, but benefit from the spiritual lessons and biblical truths discovered along the way. Children come face to face with the challenges confronting Christian and discover that they, too, deal with similar obstacles in their own lives, and that Christ saves, leads, and protects them.
Starting Off on every lesson focuses on active learning to capture children’s interest and introduces the chapter. Journeying On is a time of reading the storybook, listening to the dramatic reading, and having discussion. By asking some questions, teachers review the story, check for understanding, and apply the teaching. It’s such a blessing to see some of the children who usually very quiet now are actively engaged and participated in discussion. Stepping Out is time when we record our prayer request on a Prayer Scroll. We thank God for any prayers that were answered and make new requests.
We pray that through Pilgrim’s Progress both children and teachers grow in faith and having deeper understanding of Christ and the gospel, and discover the necessity of God’s Word, the Holy Spirit, and other believers for teaching, instruction, encouragement, and support as we walk to the glorious goal.
